Most winter illnesses, like colds, coughs, sore throats, flu-like illness and stomach bugs, get better on their own with rest, fluids and simple remedies from a pharmacy. Antibiotics don’t work for viral infections and can cause side effects.
Your pharmacist can help. Pharmacists can give advice and medicines for many minor illnesses without an appointment. Through Pharmacy First they can also assess and treat sinusitis, sore throat, earache (children), infected insect bites, impetigo, shingles and urinary infections in women, and prescribe if needed.
Be prepared: keep paracetamol, ibuprofen, oral rehydration sachets, a thermometer and plasters at home.
We don’t usually prescribe medicines you can buy cheaply for minor conditions. NHS guidance on over-the-counter medicines
