Learning Disability Support
At Moseley Avenue Surgery, we are committed to ensuring that every patient has equal access to high-quality healthcare. We recognise that people living with a learning disability can face additional barriers when accessing healthcare services, and we are dedicated to providing compassionate, personalised, and accessible support.
People with learning disabilities often experience significant health inequalities and are at greater risk of poorer health outcomes. Our aim is to reduce these barriers by creating a more supportive, understanding, and person-centred experience for every patient.
How We Support Our Patients
We have introduced a dedicated Learning Disability Champion, Jess, who helps coordinate reasonable adjustments and improve access to care for patients with learning disabilities.
This includes:
- Offering appointments at quieter times, such as the first or last clinic appointments of the day
- Prioritising access to appointments where appropriate
- Working closely with our clinical team to ensure patients receive timely support and continuity of care
- Gathering patient feedback to help improve accessibility and patient experience
Patients with learning disabilities may also have a “Purple Priority” alert added to their medical record to help staff identify and support their individual needs appropriately and sensitively.
Annual Learning Disability Health Checks
Patients aged 14 and over with a learning disability are entitled to a free annual health check through their GP practice. These appointments help identify health concerns early, support overall wellbeing, and ensure patients receive the care and support they need.
Our Learning Disability reviews are led by Dr Mahmud, who has undertaken additional training in this area. Moseley Avenue Surgery has also been involved in pilot work focused on improving care and accessibility for patients with learning disabilities.
What to Expect
